My friend gave me a copy of Polaroid Stories in October. Azuka Theatre Collective had already chosen a spring show, but the idea of a "contemporary urban tale" seemed like a fun read. About five minutes after reading this play, I called members of Azuka and pleaded my case for this piece.
Polaroid Stories made my heart beat faster-forced me to explore what was happening in its poetry. I so desperately wanted to work on a play for young actors. One that was created for a diverse audience that wasn't patronizing, condescending or dated. Polaroid Stories is a classic in its own way-knowledge of the "classics" is not required. This play is about emotions-melodramatic as well as honest, funny as well as disconcerting, and histrionic as well as intimate; not to mention the sex and violence. No wonder I wanted to direct it.
Thanks Heath!
