LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The land upon which we gather is part of the traditional territory of the Lenni-Lenape, called “Lenapehoking.” The Lenape People lived in harmony with one another upon this territory for thousands of years. During the colonial era and early federal period, many were removed west and north, but some also remain among the continuing historical tribal communities of the region: The Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation; the Ramapough Lenape Nation; and the Powhatan Renape Nation, The Nanticoke of Millsboro Delaware, and the Lenape of Cheswold Delaware. We acknowledge the Lenni-Lenape as the original people of this land and their continuing relationship with their territory. In our acknowledgment of the continued presence of Lenape people in their homeland, we affirm the aspiration of the great Lenape Chief Tamanend, that there be harmony between the indigenous people of this land and the descendants of the immigrants to this land, “as long as the rivers and creeks flow, and the sun, moon, and stars shine.”
– We thank the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation for sharing this statement.
The Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape are still here! Get to know them and show your support at www.nlltribe.com.
OUR NAME
Azuka Theatre Founder, Raelle Myrick-Hodges named the company after her niece, Jane Azuka, and to honor the strong community in which she was raised. The name Azuka is from the Nigerian word meaning “strength of foundation.”
FROM THE DIRECTOR
In the summer of 2017, I attended a reading of Galilee by the brilliant Christine Evans at the PlayPenn conference, which was held right here in this theater. I was struck then, as I am now, that the play does exactly what I’ve been longing for theater to do well, which is to talk about the environment in a way that is theatrical, entertaining, and deeply human. What a breath of fresh air! I quickly fell in love with the people of Galilee and this beautiful play that introduces them to us. Sitting in this very theater six years ago, I knew this day would eventually come, and I’m so grateful it has.
I am a person who feels a responsibility to making eco-friendly choices for myself and my family. I try to educate myself and do what I can for my household, but often feel at a loss on how to do more. I’m just one person. I’m not a scientist, farmer, or CEO. I don’t have wealth or political influence. In lamenting this on the phone with my brother one night, he gently reminded me that I do have the privilege of a platform- this stage. And right now I have the beautiful words of Christine Evans, and a group of brilliant artists to interpret them. And I have you! Sitting here in these seats. You chose live theater today, so I already know you’re pretty great.
We are all just one person, but I am here to gently remind you that you have more influence than you think. We all do. And I’m not just talking about the environment.
So this is my offering to you: a play which is ultimately about hope. If you’ve felt at a loss, if you’ve felt you can’t keep trying, this play asks us to get back in the water. And keep swimming up.
This one’s for Sherry. “To absent friends,”
Rebecca May Flowers
