We miss you. We also need you.

We miss keeping you, our audience, front of mind as we make theater that engages, challenges and delights you. We miss seeing you at the box office when you check in for tickets. We miss hearing your laughter fill the theater. We miss chatting with you about the play you just saw. We miss reading your opinions scribbled on your Pay-What-You-Decide envelopes.

We also need your support – afterall, there is no theater without an audience. We have seen too many of our small businesses in Philadelphia close. As a small business ourselves, we need your help to make it through this dark time.

While Azuka decided early in the pandemic not to produce any shows for the 2020-21 season, your gift will still support the creation of theater via New Pages, our local playwrights group. Full production may not be possible, but writers can still write! And our New Pages playwrights have been busy doing just that. Through the magic of Zoom, we have held in-house readings of new drafts with actors, and have offered to mount public readings according to playwright interest (stay tuned for the dates for these readings via our website and social media!). We also hired Quinn Eli, a beloved local playwright and founder of the Philadelphia playwrights lab the Foundry, to lead New Pages as our Resident Dramaturg.

Your gift will also support Azuka’s work to strengthen our infrastructure. In response to the clear call from the theater community to establish anti-racist practices and inclusive policies, we have made this work a priority this year. In fact, we just contracted Farah Bala and the FARSIGHT Agency (www.gofarsight.com) to lead our staff and board in the endeavor to become a more equitable institution.
