It has been an extraordinary experience returning to live theater and welcoming you back with our first production in 20 months! As the Broad Street Review said: “Young Money feels like the exact type of play Azuka should be staging right now—a show that centers the voices of complex, intricate characters, given vivid life by talented performers, and ushered to the stage by a young, diverse creative team.” This is the kind of theater Azuka has always made, amplifying the voices of people whose stories go unheard, turning a light on lives we may not normally encounter in the theater.

Our return to live theater hasn’t been without its challenges, but the strong foundation you’ve provided allowed us to rise to those challenges. Now, as we continue into our 2022 season, we look to you for renewed support for three of the programs Azuka Theatre has built on that strong foundation: New Audiences, New Professionals and New Pages.

The Pay What You Decide box office has opened the doors of our theater to hundreds of New Audience members who may not normally attend live theater. This groundbreaking initiative continues to welcome an average of 25% more patrons than in previous years.
In 2012, Azuka began our New Professionals program. No other professional theatre in our region devotes an entire production to early-career artists, and our investment in the development of young theatre makers has paid off. Actors and designers who work on these productions go on to exciting careers around the city and across the country.
New Pages is our most recent investment in the growth of the theater community in Philadelphia. We have always championed the work of local writers, and now we have deepened our commitment by creating a writer’s group that helps these artists develop their plays and prepare them for full productions.
